American Life League launches new ad campaign

WASHINGTON, D.C. — "Every day, Planned Parenthood undermines American values, and it does so with our tax money," said American Life League president Judie Brown. "Frankly, we're fed up. That's why we're beginning a new advertising campaign to educate Americans about what this organization does with our hard-earned dollars. When people find out the truth, we're convinced Planned Parenthood's tax funding will quickly dry up."

The first phase of the ad campaign consists of a series of full-page ads, beginning in today's edition of the Washington Times. The first ad is headlined, "Reason #72 to stop Planned Parenthood from getting over $265 million in your tax dollars: Racism." The ad outlines the racist philosophies of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, and points out that although African-Americans make up about 11 percent of the U.S. population, more than 30 percent of all abortions involve black babies.

Other ads in the series will focus on Planned Parenthood's effort to conceal information about potential cases of statutory rape, the higher incidence of suicide among teenagers who have had abortions, and the pornographic material Planned Parenthood distributes to children under the guise of sex education.

"Americans should demand an end to taxpayer support for the likes of Planned Parenthood." said Mrs. Brown. "That is why American Life League is stepping up its petition campaign to encourage lawmakers at the federal, state and local levels to cut off every penny of taxpayer assistance to Planned Parenthood, which operates the country's deadliest chain of abortion facilities. We simply cannot tolerate the idea of our tax money being used to subsidize these offensive activities."

On My Mind...

I am not anti-choice... I am anti-wrong choice.

Events are unfolding almost faster than can be cataloged. At least five states are in motion to get aboard the abortion ban train: Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, South Dakota and Tennessee are front-runners in proposing to ban all abortions except when the woman's life is in danger.
I find myself often having to correct readers when they say we are anti-choice, when in fact, I believe it is all about choice. We pro-life advocates generally believe in making the right choice. I, and many like-minded others, believe that abortion simply should not be a choice we should have to make. The right to life we are all given should exclude abortion as an option to unplanned or unwanted pregnancies. Abortion fits right in with cannibalism, rape, genocide, murder and the like, as things that are simply wrong. -- Joe

Two More Women Die After Medical Abortion with Abortion Pill RU-486, FDA Warns

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, March 17, 2006 (
LifeSiteNews.com) - In a Public Health Advisory released today, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has alerted consumers to an additional two deaths of women after taking the abortion pill mifepristone (also known as Mifeprix or RU-486). The known death toll stemming from the abortion drug in the US is six women and countless unborn children since the drug's legalization in 2000. Beyond that there have been over 600 adverse effects recorded from the drug.

Among the most serious events other than death, 42 women experienced life-threatening hemorrhages, while 68 had severe hemorrhage requiring blood transfusion. There were 66 cases of infection including seven cases of septic shock. Seventeen women had undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies before taking the drug - also a serious and potentially fatal situation, which resulted in the death of one woman. At least 513 of the women required surgery, with 235 of the surgeries deemed emergency. (

The Agency received verbal notification of the latest deaths in the United States from the manufacturer, Danco Laboratories. "At this time we are investigating all circumstances associated with these cases and are not able to confirm the causes of death," said an FDA release. "However, all providers of medical abortion and their patients need to be aware of the specific circumstances and directions for use of this drug and all risks including sepsis when considering treatment."

Concerned Women for America (CWA) expressed outrage that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still refuses to pull the abortion pill RU-486 from the market even after today's announcement. The FDA has pulled other drugs that have caused fewer deaths and less severe complications than RU-486."

The FDA admits that only 10 percent of complications suffered by patients from drugs get reported. Over 800 complications due to RU-486 have been reported to the FDA.

"Two more families are grieving because the FDA refuses to pull this dangerous drug from the market," said Wright. By giving its approval, FDA participates in the deception that RU-486 is safe. How many women must die before the FDA will act? Are their lives less important than making abortion convenient?

In light of the newly reported deaths, U.S. Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) urged that Congress take action and pass Holly's Law. Holly's law, authored by Representative Roscoe Bartlett (HR 1079), would withdraw FDA approval of RU-486 and subject it to a thorough review, which it did not receive for its present approval. The law is named after 18 year old Holly Patterson who was killed by the dangerous drug.

"RU-486 was rushed to approval for political purposes by the Clinton Administration, and as a result numerous safety concerns were suppressed, trivialized and overlooked," said Smith, Co-Chairman of the Pro-Life Caucus in the House of Representatives.

On My Mind...  An open memo to South Dakotan abortion supporters making death-threats to pro-life supporters, et. al :

I am not sorry you are unhappy that those of us who support life just don't want you to continue to have the right to murder babies!

South Dakota Law Affirms the Humanity of Children Conceived by Rape or Incest -- Why Would a Pro Life President Advocate Killing Them?

SAN DIEGO, Mar 1st
[ Christian Wire Service ] -- In an article that should stun both pro life advocates and pro Bush supporters, President Bush advocated the killing of unborn children by the thousands each year. The article dated February 28, 2006, stated that President Bush was stating his opposition to the pro life South Dakota law because it did not allow for the exceptions of rape or incest. According to the Guttmacher Institute, abortion for cases of rape or incest amount to about 1% of all abortions. See: except rape

“To some that may seem like a small number, but if you had over 10,000 people die by dismemberment each year that would be horrific. That is what happens when we advocate and fund like our President does, the aborting of children conceived by either rape or incest. All children should be loved and at least be adopted instead of killed,” so says Phil Magnan Director of Biblical Family Advocates

“There is no doubt that rape and incest are violent crimes that should be prosecuted. But why are we killing the innocent bystander for the sins of the father? We should consider Deuteronomy 24:16. This mindset of allowing the killing of these innocent children conceived by rape or incest makes us no different than the person that we have despised for their violent acts against the innocent. America and our President must ask the question, are children conceived by rape or incest some how less human and worthy only of dismemberment? Was world-renowned singer Ethel Waters less human when she was conceived by rape? Consider that less than 1% of the student body of Columbine were killed, does that make those who were killed any less human? Should that reduce our shock and horror that those children will not be able to live out the potential of their lives?”

Magnan went onto say that “The statements by President Bush are a tragic reflection of many Americans who have embraced a so called pro life position that is indefensible and erodes their credibility to be even called pro life. They end up affirming the pro-choice mentality that children should be killed if we do not want them. Even at 10,000 children a year, it would bring the number to over 330,000 children who were discriminated against and killed on the basis of the circumstances of their conception since 1973.”

Abortion Ban Signed into Law by South Dakota Governor

By John-Henry Westen

PIERRE, March 6, 2006 (
LifeSiteNews.com) - South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds has signed into law the first abortion ban in the United States since the 1973 Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade decision. The bill, House Bill 1215, passed with strong bi-partisan support in both houses and makes abortion a felony in the state, punishable by up to five years imprisonment. It is to go into effect this July.

The only exception to the South Dakota law would be cases where the life of the mother was in danger. Lawmakers successfully avoided making changes to the bill that would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest, or for the "health" of the mother, exceptions which usually cripple the application of laws against abortion. It does not prohibit abortifacient drugs such as the morning after pill in cases of rape or incest.

On signing the bill the Governor stated, "In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society. The sponsors and supporters of this bill believe that abortion is wrong because unborn children are the most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society. I agree with them."

The Governor acknowledged that the law is "a direct challenge" to Roe vs. Wade and said he expects the law to be taken to court and prevented from going into effect in July. "That challenge will likely take years to be settled and it may ultimately be decided by the United States Supreme Court. Our existing laws regulating abortions will remain in effect," said Rounds.

Rounds did suggest however that a reversal of opinion from the Supreme Court is possible.

Rounds concluded his remarks saying: "While this is a state and national issue, I want to emphasize that whatever the courts decide, South Dakotans will continue to care about both the unborn child and mother. If we are pro-life, we must recognize the need to take care of women who are faced with a difficult pregnancy. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy, we cannot protect the innocent child, unless we protect and care for the mother. We must help each mother to see the value of the gift that is a child, and nurture the mother for her own sake and for the sake of her child.

"Our state is committed to helping greater numbers of pregnant woman who will allow their babies to grow inside them and be born. In both the private and public sector in South Dakota, we have healthcare options, economic assistance before and after birth, adoption services, and, most importantly, people who want to help pregnant women, young mothers and their children."

In The Mail Bag... From our friend at Priests For Life

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, PriestsForLife

Why An Abortionist?

On March 10, some abortion supporters observe the “National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers.” They recommend that people affirm the men and women who make their living – or at least part of it – by killing babies. Those who promote this Day of Appreciation recommend activities like sending cards and letters, fruit baskets and flowers to the abortionists and their staff, or taking out ads of support. All very nice, except that few of those who do these things understand that it doesn’t help. Not all the flowers in the world can change the fact that most abortionists resent the work they do.

This may be surprising to people on both sides of the abortion controversy, but studies of abortionists, as well as the pastoral experience we have at Priests for Life in working with those in the industry – and those who have come out of it – confirm that abortionists tend to hate what they are doing, and feel that they are doing society’s dirty work.

Among those doing groundbreaking research in this area is Dr. Phillip Ney, a Canadian psychiatrist who has been studying for decades how and why someone becomes an abortionist, and how and why they stop. These are critical questions. How and why would someone endure the rigors and expenses of medical school in order to be known as an abortionist, with all the stigma and shame that brings? Why would one dedicate his or her healing skills to a procedure that has not been demonstrated to treat or heal any ailment, either physical, psychological, or social? As Dr. Ney says, It does not seem to make sense how a good-looking man or woman can kiss his/her children an affectionate good-bye in the morning, take his/her briefcase and drive to an abortuary where his/her only intent is to kill and maim(The Centurion’s Pathway, p.7).

No, it does not make sense – until we begin to see the pattern that research on abortionists has revealed, namely, a pattern of abuse and neglect when they themselves were children. Now this does not mean they are not responsible for what they are doing. But if the child within oneself was killed psychologically when the person was young, then as an adult, that person will sometimes re-enact the trauma by killing the child within another person, physically. Psychologists call this “traumatic re-enactment.” We don’t understand what happened to us, so we try to repeat it, relive it, re-create the circumstances surrounding it so that we can master it.

This is a scary and powerful side to how our mind works. It explains why a person may wander from one abusive relationship to another and never seem to learn. The reason is precisely that the person is trying to learn about what he/she is suffering. And they hate it all the while. Abortionist David Zbaraz said, “It’s a nasty, dirty, yucky thing and I always come home angry” (Washington Post, March 3, 1980).

As we will see in next week’s column, many others feel the same today. --Father Frank
