On My Mind… The Broken Wing
Our
Government is caught up in a fur ball of activity. Endeavoring to tip the
scales of justice towards Roe V Wade Senators
are turning the search for a new Supreme Court Justice into a
candidate-feeding frenzy. I have watched in awe as the pro-choice Senate has
ripped into Samuel Alito like piranhas, dissembling him chunk by document
chunk.

On the matter of abortion in general, 54 percent of Americans oppose either all or most abortions as thirty-nine percent of those polled believe abortion should only be legal in a few rare circumstances, such as rape, incest or to prevent the death of the mother. Another 16 percent say abortion should never be legal.
Just 42 percent generally support legalized abortion with 26 percent saying it should always be legal and 16 percent saying it should be legal in most circumstances.
But on the question of a Constitutional amendment banning all abortions except for those to save the life of the mother, Americans oppose it by a 61-37 percent margin. The number favoring such a ban could have been significantly higher had rape and incest been included in it.
Meanwhile, as the Supreme Court considers a case this week on a New Hampshire law to require parental notification before a teen girl can have an abortion, 69 percent say that's a good idea and just 28 percent oppose it.
Americans also support Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito's decision in a 1990 appeals court case about a Pennsylvania law that allows husbands to know when their wives are considering an abortion. Some 64 percent support that idea while just 34 percent were against it, Gallup reported.
The CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll was conducted November 11-13 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I guess
some of us may have had the opportunity to say this at one time or another in
our lives: "The silence is killing me." Well... it is me,
anyway.
Do the math:
They have the dollars
– We do not speak
= They Buy The Laws.
Judge Samuel Alito’s nomination,
and possible appointment, is bringing us to the brink. Advocates on both sides
are scrambling to find any form of leverage, not knowing which way the tide will
turn.
We will be finding out soon enough if
the pro-abortion ranks are correct in their assumptions. Will they find instead the
tools in His Honor to maintain Roe-V-Wade, or will the new court will come to
it’s senses as we pro-life advocates have and see that the only choice
must be a choice for life.
To filibuster… or not, is not the
question. My hope is that
there will be a balance in the court, and that it will rule with integrity.

Congressional Bill Would Help College Students Avoid Abortions

Washington,
DC (LifeNews.com) -- College-aged
women tend to have the highest rate of abortions in the country and a new
Congressional measure is intended to give them the financial and practical
pregnant support necessary to help them avoid abortions.
This
week, pro-life lawmakers introduced the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Pregnant and
Parenting Students Act of 2005.
The
measure would establish a pilot program to provide $10 million for 200 grants to
encourage institutions of higher education to establish and operate a pregnant
and parenting student services office. The office would serve pregnant and
parenting students and help students who are considering adoption instead of
abortion.
On
many college campuses, student health insurance pays for abortions but won't
provide students with the support needed to carry a pregnancy to term. Most
student health offices have staff that will gladly refer students to local
abortion centers but won't advice them of abortion alternatives.
Feminists
for Life, a national organization that has long addressed the needs of women in
the abortion debate, says this new bill changes that scenario.
“We
are so pleased that we can share what we have learned from pregnant and
parenting students through our efforts hosting FFL's Pregnancy Resource Forums
at top campuses across the country," says FFL President Serrin Foster.
"Today's
parents need creative solutions that challenge the status quo," Foster
explained. Because of the bill, "more women, children and families will be
better served.”
Senator
Elizabeth Dole, a North Carolina Republican and the only pro-life woman in the
Senate, and Rep. Melissa Hart, a Pennsylvania Republican, are the lead sponsors
of the measure.
Research
from the Alan Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood,
points to the need for the legislation.
According
to AGI, forty-five percent of women who have abortions are of college-age, 18-24
years old. Women with some college had a pregnancy rate that was lower than
average, but still “had the highest abortion rate of any educational group.”
“The
statistics support what pregnant and parenting students have been telling
Feminists for Life for years-that they need more resources and support,”
Foster said.
Among
women who had abortions, 71% of 18-19 year olds and 58% of 20-24 year olds said
having a child would interfere with their education or career.
“We
need to listen," Foster said.
Colleges
who participated in the grants authorized by the legislation would host an
initial pregnancy forum to better understand how to help students. The forums
would help set goals for improved services and access to services including
housing, child care, maternity coverage and riders for additional family members
in any student health care plan.
